(I apologize for the lateness of the game wrap up, I WAS there ... had the every game menu of 2 hot dogs-plain, a water and Twizzlers provided by Coach Morrow at Jackson on Friday night - thank you ... had to take my winter weather driving exam today going from the Hocking Hills in the rain, to sleet & ice covered roads to slush, to the snow covered roads of Franklin county & Delaware - must have had 4-5 inches of snow up there ... made it back in one piece, lots of cars, semis in the median and/or 30 yds over embankments etc. on the way up - the Ohio HP were busy)

... Eastern Pike vs Minford ... 18-2 vs 18-1 ... Myles Montgomery needing 30 points to reach the 2000 point milestone in his high school career ... the Minford varsity players were shooting around prior to the JV team game warmups ... Myles Montgomery was shooting shots from "the logo" ... now most logos are huge, bigger than the center court jump circle ... the eagle logo at Eastern High School "fits almost exactly" IN the jump circle ... I went down on the floor talked to Myles, Coach Montgomery and Coach Shoemaker ... told them that it was a "bold move by the Eastern coaching staff to "shrink the logo" so that it would be a longer shot for Myles to hit a "three from the logo" ... as it turned out THAT may have been the best move defensively for the Eagles the entire night as Mr. Montgomery DID NOT hit one from the logo, but he did throw down 30 pts (1 triple - not from the logo) ... he almost outscored the Eastern team as the Minford D held EHS to 35 points for the game, 1 fg in each of 3 quarters and Myles Montgomery DID reach the 2000 Point Milestone in his illustrious career as a Falcon ... Minford won the game in the opening 2 minutes and 58 seconds ... a 9-0 Falcon run forcing an Eastern timeout at 5:02 on the clock - 6-5 sr Bennett Kayser with an offensive board and stickback 2pts. ... 5-10 sr Myles Montgomery with a transition 2pts at the rim ... soph Ashton Reeder drained a corner 3 pter ... Kayser 2pts from the short corner ... Eastern's sr. sg/fwrd DeClan Davis hit a 3 to get the Eagles on the board ... Montgomery showed his quickness with back to back drives to the bucket 4pts ... sr. 6-4 Jackson Shoemaker hit a trey from beyond the arc .... Reeder took one of the Eagles 6 turnovers in the quarter to the house for 2pts/5 in the qtr ... the only thing to slow down the Falcon onslaught was a technical foul that put 6-1 soph Boston Webb on the line for the Eagles - make, make ... any thoughts of momentum from the technicals was wiped clean by a 2 handed throw down monster dunk by Bennett Kayser ... the quarter ended with Eastern getting only 1 fg in the quarter & 4/4 from the charity stripe while both Kayser and Montgomery each had 8 pts to lead the Falcons ... Montgomery needing 22 pts for 2000 ... Minford 24 Eastern 7 after one ... Coach Leist's Eagles looked more like the 18-2 team that entered the game as EHS queued up a 21 point quarter in the 2nd ... DeClan Davis with 7pts/10 for the half ...5-11 jr Aiden Werner with 8pts .. the outstanding shooting guard/PG for EHS Tucker Leist got on the board with one of the expected deep treys (4pts in the qtr) ... 6-1 soph post player Cade Leist with a rebound and putback had 3 pts in the frame ... you'd think a 21 point quarter would put a dent in the opening quarter deficit - didn't happen- as the Falcons were literally and figuratively "rolling down hill" as the MHS team jumped on the Montgomery wagon or race horse as the West Liberty commit took a pair of EHS miscues to the rim for 4 pts... speed kills - MM drove to the bucket on separate possessions and finished - 4pts ... 8 pts in the quarter/16 in the half/ no three pointers/didn't even take a 3 pointer thru 2 qtrs ... 14 points to reach 2000 ... Kayser who when checking the napkin stat lines usually matches the Montgomery point totals in each of the MHS contests ... B Kayser put up 6 pts including a dunk at the rim off of a perfect alley oop dime / 14 pts in the half ... Shoemaker/Reeder/ Kade Glockner each chipped in 2pts in the period ... Minford 46 Eastern 28 at the half ... game? - over ... the only game left was the game within the game - whether MM would reach 2000 points in THIS game or the next as this one was going to be a running clock at some point in the 2nd half ... still no three pointer by Montgomery in the game ... Tucker Leist for Eastern was held in check with only 1 trey and 4pts which as it turned out would be all that the talented senior guard for the Eagles would have for the game ... the Eagles after half time were held to but 1 fg in each the 3rd and 4th quarters (DeClan Davis with his 3rd trey on the night in the 3rd period and off the Eastern bench sr. Sherman Salisbury hit a trey on Senior Night for the Eagles) ... Eastern with but 7 points in the last 2 quarters ... the 3rd quarter on the Minford side of the court had the law firm of Kayser & Montgomery present their case - Kayser adding 9 pts to his total of 23 on the night ... Montgomery with 12 points including his first 3 pointer of the night ... Kade Glockner drained a triple and Reeder added a transition finish for 2pts ... Montgomery with 28 points in his pocket , running clock ... Minford 72 Eastern 32 after 3 ... no logo shot ... nothing fancy really, yet it - the shot to reach the 2000th point - was all Myles Montgomery ... he's a NEXT LEVEL player, 5-10 but as strong a player with the ball as you will find, not many if any in the Southeast district have the first step, strong dribble drive and the ability to finish at the rim as MM ... Montgomery with the hard dribble down the right side of the lane, elevated and finished ... 2pts ... the 1999th and 2000th points of his high school basketball career ... outstanding ... MM took the well deserved game ball and a seat ... Eastern got a 3 from Sherman Salisbury ... Minford with the running clock got a three pointer from Mark Napier 3pts/ 6-4 Colt Donahoe with a transition finish and putback basket 4pts ... game ... game within the game all with W's for the Falcons ... Minford is perhaps the best team in the Southeast and possibly East in any division (Warren can claim that distinction with a strong case as well). Eastern respectfully just nothing near what it's record might indicate. Having said that, they are in a really weak district and could win the title. Such as it is.
