Minford 71
South Webster 62 a final
... deja vu all over again , as far as the crowd goes - got to South Webster High School at 3:58 ... made the mistake of sitting in the Gladiator instead of "trying" the door ... went in around 4:20 ... was about 30'ish in line ... by the time 4:45 rolled around, the line had swung around the inside of the SW hallways ... smallish gymnasium seating on the visitors side ... crowd is right on the floor ... great high school hoops atmosphere to watch 2 of the top teams Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line go at it for the 2nd time in 2 weeks to determine whether the SOCIII Champion - would it be Minford's all alone or would they again split the series and "kiss your sister"/share the league title ...
... one of the factors in South Webster's 2 losses coming into the game was that the supporting cast - didn't support offensively ... 6-8 sr Eli Roberts was the show while both Minford and Fairland were able to minimize anyone not named Roberts in those 2 losses by the Jeeps ... the Jeeps put the notion that the roster outside of Roberts would not show again putting it to bed early in the opening quarter as the underclassmen were the show in the 1st - jr. Beau Stephens scored in the paint 2pts, Dylan Shupert had back to back transition buckets 4pts before the shooting guard showed that he was going to be a factor in this game as he drained a deep three pointer in front of the Minford bench 3pts/7 pts in the qtr ... Stephens ( 13 pts in Game 1) continued playing with confidence as he got into the paint for his 2nd fg in the period & 4pts ... in the last outing SW jr Brycin McClintic was a no show on the napkin stat sheet, in the 1st period the lanky 3 guard hit a midrange 15 footer 2pts ... all of the SW points came from the junior class - 14 1st quarter points - the supporting cast had arrived for the Jeeps ... game on ... Minford got off to a good start in answering the Jeep underclassmen ... 6-5 sr. Bennett Kayser led the Falcon attack as he tallied 9 first qtr points - following a Kade Glockner corner trey 3pts ... Kayser grabbed an offensive board and a stickback 2pts , Curtis Glenn drained a three ball from the top of the key 3pts ... Kayser hit a 12 foot jumper 2pts, then a drive to the rim 2pts & 1 ... Myles Montgomery drained a deep trey 3pts , Kayser followed with a 15 ft midrange J 2pts ... Minford 18 South Webster 14 after 1 ... Physical play was the name of the game - post season officiating that "let the players play" for the most part ... thru the first quarter the supporting cast for SW had shown BUT the "who" they were supporting had not - Eli Roberts was scoreless heading into the 2nd qtr ... Shupert continued to be "the guy" as the jr. hit a jumper inside the 3 point line 2pts ... Roberts made it to the dance getting a pass in the paint & finishing for 2pts ..fouled ... missed the & 1 ... Beau Stephens hit a 12 fter 2pts in front of Dylan Shupert's 2nd triple of the game 3pts/ 5 in the qtr & 12 for the half ... Roberts hit a shot from the foul line 2pts , Hunter Barnard got in the scorebook with a drive & finish 2pts to go with a strip, steal and score 2pts ... SW put up 16 in the 2nd following the script - Roberts with a supporting cast ... in the opening quarter of action, SW played a physical brand of basketball especially on the perimeter ... Montgomery & Co. struggled getting to the rim, finding open shots on the perimeter at a premium ...MHS had 8 turnovers in the first 2 quarters ... the Falcons played good team offense in the 2nd taking what the defense gave them as 5 different players put-up numbers on the napkin stat sheet ... Montgomery with a pair of hard drives to the rim 4pts ... Kayser with his 3rd midrange jumper 2pts ... both Ashton Reeder and Jackson Shoemaker hit shots from beyond the arc 3pts each ... 6-2 Curtis Glenn had a solid first half at both ends of the floor off the bench as he added a shot on the blocks to go with his 1st period trey ... Minford 32 South Webster 30 at the half ... in game 1, the 3rd quarter was THE quarter that gave Minford the separation it needed to put that game out of reach ... in that first matchup SW scored 8 points in the 3rd while giving up 16 ... not on this night as the Jeep supporting cast of Stephens/Mault/Shupert and White all chipped in to keep the Jeeps in the hunt ... Stephens on 2 Minford turnovers scored in transition 4pts coming out of the locker room ... Christian White got in the scorebook draining an open look three 3pts ... Roberts with a drive and finish at the rim 2pts ... Shupert with his 3rd trey of the game 3pts ... Stephens finished on a fade away jumper in the paint 2pts ... Roberts from deep 3pts falling away ... Owen Mault got on the board with a transition bucket and miss on the &1 ... the Jeeps stayed in the game, weren't going anywhere ... the duo of Montgomery & Kayser had not disappointed as the 2 next level players showed their merit as Montgomery drained a trey 3pts, steal & score 2pts , hit his 2nd triple of the quarter ... Kayser in the paint for 2pts, a transition bucket off a strip, steal, & score 2pts , fouled - miss, make ; a put back of his own miss 2pts / 7 in the qtr/18 on the game thru 3 ... Minford forced 5 SW miscues in the 3rd ... Ashton Reeder took a turnover to the house 2pts ... Reeder finished the Falcon qtr with a pair of FTs 2/2 ... Falcons had 19 points to match the Jeep 3rd quarter effort ... Minford 51 South Webster 49 after 3 ... the South Webster team defense did a nice job of pressuring the ball on the perimeter, double teaming Montgomery everytime he touched the ball - forcing him to give up the ball ... through 3 periods Glenn, Reeder, Glockner all got looks from the double teams/traps on Montgomery ... the looks WERE there ... the shots were taken - by players not named Montgomery or Kayser ... THIS kept the score close along with the Jeeps supporting cast of Shupert & Stephens showing out ... the 4th period showed all of us in the Cheap Seats what "next level" talent looks like - Montgomery/Kayser ... MM was solid but it was a struggle offensively - he had to work hard for shots & points... all expected in a game of this magnitude ...in the 4th Montgomery showed his quickness on defense, his knack for being the first off the floor, strong hands to grab boards, hustle that kept possessions alive - the intangibles beyond "just scoring the ball" that make him a next level talent ... then there's Bennett Kayser - the young man was THE difference in the game ... the hustle, the ability to get his own missed shots and the putback buckets ...scoring in the period- Shoemaker with a trey that matched a Roberts triple ... Kayser with a bucket at the rim & 1 3pts, Kayser across the lane for 2 pts , Kayser miss/rebound/ putback 2pts ... repeat - Kayser miss/rebound/ putback 2pts ... SW got 6 points from Shupert in the period including his 4th trey of the game 6pts in the qtr/21 on the game ... Roberts after opening the quarter with a 3 ball scored on a putback 2pts 5 in the qtr before fouling out with 13.1 on the clock ... Owen Mault added 2pts on a drive and finish to put a cap on the Jeeps scoring for the game ... the final points of the game came at the free throw line as Montgomery went 6 for 8 and Kayser 2/2 from the line ... the Minford Falcons finished as the last team standing in the SOCIII with a prefect 10-0 league record, 20-1 overall on the season ... Minford 71 South Webster 62 a final ...

Webster coming back from down 9 showed who these boys are. I’m sure many thought it was over at that point.
SW’s #2 fan

... both teams are too good to "run away and hide from one another" ... the defenses made it so the offensive flow wasn't lasting long for either team and EACH OFFENSE stepped up and had "a shot" that stopped the opposing teams run ... during the Webster run coming out of the locker room at intermission - the SW defensive intensity went up, the offense was in attack mode, feeding off the defensive take aways & scored ... Roberts drained a trey ... THEN the stop the run "shot" - Kayser struggling to get the ball - no shots to take ... Montgomery couldn't do anything but give up the ball due to the perimeter trapping D by the Jeeps - the "shot" that brought order back to the game for Minford was Shoemaker taking a "desperation" pass from the right wing ... Shoe was just right of the top of the key, took the pass, squared up, shot over Roberts for a BIG TIME 3 - order restored ... it was a great sequence to watch imo ...The Ghost of Swanker wrote: Wed Feb 19, 2025 9:37 am Webster coming back from down 9 showed who these boys are. ... Shupert was outstanding all night ... he's a player for sure ... the Jeeps had 3 scorers! unfortunately for SW they needed a 4th - I thought McClintic would play a bigger scoring role for SW - he's a nice offensive player ... the law firm of Kayser & Montgomery is hard to beat ... not just good players, they ARE truly "next level" players which I know sounds petty as to the difference between "good" and "next level" ... but when you watch hoops you can see which players are going to the next level and WHY they are going to the next level ... strength has a lot to do with it ... floor presence ... energy that "get's to rebounds that a "good" player doesn't get to " ... strength with the ball that gets through double/triple teams ... following of shots that weren't good shots to take but the strong rebound/putback & score ... tenacity comes to mind... taking control of situations ... there's just a difference ... Minford has that ...
... best of luck to both teams in the post season representing the SE District against teams Above the Lancaster-Dixon Line !

Outstanding take PFloyd.
Great game. great environment. Congrats Minford on the title and a great season thus far. Will this be the year that in season success translates into tourney success?

... sure hope so ! BUT (and there's always a but) the further a team goes down the post season road the better the teams get, the better the players get- teams you play also have "next level" players , the good teams are teams that have solid fundamentals engrained in every player that steps on the court, due to the solid fundamentals the best of teams with the best of coaches can spend time in preparation - then practice the execution of the plan - they aren't teaching fundamentals anymore ... I love watching games in the post season - seeing the strategies that are put into place, watching the execution of the players on the court ... the further you go the more likely that the teams have "a dude or two or three" games will be won or lost by the supporting cast , the benches ... great time of year if you are a Cheap Seat guy!SoutheastHoopsWizard wrote: Wed Feb 19, 2025 12:12 pm Outstanding take PFloyd.
