Miami Trace 79 Warren 71 final D3 District Semifinal

Post by pfloyd »

Miami Trace 79
Warren 71 final

... Warren vs Miami Trace ... #2 seed vs #1 seed ... 2 losses vs 0 losses ... on the line a trip to Basketball :30 at the Convo ... as fans - we watched two of the best teams in the Southeast District go to war for 32 minutes ... physical battle not just in the paint but all over the court , at every position ... a Miami Trace TEAM that showed "size DOES matter" ... strength DOES matter ... 5 scorers WILL beat 1 & change on the night that mattered ... Coach Ackley's Panthers never trailed in the game ... opened with a 7-0 run and never allowed Warren to get closer than 4 at any point in the game ... great game plan by MT - obviously with 6-7 jr Adam Guthrie in the paint the offense revolves around the big man ... Guthrie scored down on the blocks (5 fgs on the night) but his biggest asset was having the big man in the high post ... I counted 8 MT fgs coming off of the pass into the high post, drives off of or around Guthrie to the rim for buckets ... or passes into the paint with Guthrie on the block or just above the block, back cuts from the wing for buckets ... Miami Trace used their overall size, to attack the rim for 32 minutes ... throw in timely 3 pointers - the Panthers only took 10 in the game but knocked down 5 of them led by freshman PG Gage Bowers -with 3 treys on his ball, 2 in the opening quarter ... soph Julian Baker was outstanding with 12 points but his 6-3 football player strength helped Miami Trace control the paint ... Miami Trace had all 5 starters hit double figures ... as a team almost getting 50 pts (48) in the paint for the game ... defensively Trace took away anyone not named Stadelman - the length/height of the senior wings - Skye Salyers 6-4 & Trey Robinette 6-4 made life miserable for Warren just to get looks on the perimeter and literally impossible to get looks in the paint without altering shots going up ... AND YET! the Warriors of Coach Maddox were in this one right up to the final 1:44 of the game ... 2 possession game ... Warren was down throughout the game by 9-13 points ... the Warriors would make a run get to within striking distant of 4-6 points - MT would go to Guthrie either in the high post or down in the paint - the big man found teammates for open shots that Miami Trace hit most of the night ... as the clock became the Panthers friend in the 4th ... what had been a horrible night at the line for MT - 2 of 10 from the line thru 3 qtrs - turned into the Panthers being put on the line in the last 2 minutes & change often enough their free throw shooting got better ... Guthrie 8/12 in the 4th from the line ... Bowers 1/2 ...Baker 2/3 ... Robinette 2/2 ... Salyers 1/2 ... in all Trace was put on the line for 21 shots in the 4th making 14 ... just enough to hold off the Warriors , Julian Stadelman's 44 point effort and advance to Basketball :30 at the Convo ... Miami Trace 79 Warren 71 a final

... 7-0 Miami at the 6:19 mark of the opening quarter - an Adam Guthrie putback bucket 2pts ... Trey Robinette drained an open look trey - 3pts and Skye Salyer took a Warren turnover to the rim for 2pts ... timeout Warren ... the starting lineup for MT all dented the napkin stat sheet... after the "old men" opened the scoring the youngsters showed they came to play as well - freshman PG 6-1 Gage Bowers hit a pair of threes, sandwiched around a drive off of the big man in the high post for 2pts ... soph 6-3 Julian Baker scored twice in paint for MT - a great opening/almost mistake free quarter for the Panthers - 19 pts ... the Miami Trace D didn't allow penetration , didn't allow open looks from beyond the arc ... shots in the paint ? - weren't ... if your Coach Maddox , who you gonna call - Julian Stadelman, the 6-1 sr. PG worked hard to find any shot opportunities - Stadelman hit 3 triples and an acrobatic drive down the lane for 2 ... 11 pts on Stadelman's ball for WHS ... Miami Trace 19 Warren 12 after one ... the Miami Trace offense was almost unstoppable as Warren tried to keep the ball out of the paint away from the big man Guthrie , double teams, physical play down low ... MT moved Guthrie to the high post, attacking the void around the big man ... 5 drives & finishes in the 2nd setup by the high post screens, handoffs ... finds down low , usually on the backside opposite Guthrie on the right or left block - easy buckets ... a 16 point offensive quarter for MT with scoring spread around everyone on the floor again as 5 Panthers put up points in the 2nd led by Guthrie's 4pts/ Robinette 4/Bowers with 4 ... Trace took only 2 three point attempts in the 2nd opting for the high % shots on goal ... the ease with which Trace was scoring in their offense made every offensive set for Warren look like it was impossible to find a shot anywhere at their offensive end ... at the 5:58 mark in the quarter Warren was down 13 trailing 12-25 ... at 2:39 in the frame MT 33-21 ... the Warriors finally were able to spread the scoring around as 5 players for WHS put points up - Connor Barry with a triple & midrange jumper 5pts/ Stadelman with 2pts in the paint to go with 2/2 from the line 4pts/ Lupardus, Nick Cressey, Tyson Cochran each chipped in 2pts in the qtr. ... each team had 4 miscues in the period that neither team converted into points ... Miami Trace 35 Warren 27 at the half ... the combination of MT size/length/strength and Mr. Guthrie demanding the double team on every trip downcourt was unstoppable in the opening half of action ... both teams were expending lots of energy, the physical play was not for the weak of heart ... I scribbled on my napkin stat sheet- "this is a War" in reference to the physicality of play ... if you've followed Warren hoops, the Warriors battle, in the 3rd Warren turned the Panthers over 9 times in the quarter while only having 1 miscue ... give a lot of credit to sr. Nick Cressey coming in off the bench , "stirring the pot" , the 6-0 senior got after it on the defensive end accounting for a transition bucket and forcing multiple MT turnovers that ended in WHS points in a run that saw the Trace lead cut to 4 points by the end of the period ... Cressey and 6-5 sr. Hayden Wells each scored in the paint, Stadelman hit back to back 3's as the Warrior defensive pressure was getting to MT ... for the Panthers Robinette got a putback bucket and finish in the lane on a Guthrie dime ... Salyers with a transition bucket on a WHS turnover ... Bowers hit his 3rd trey on the game to go with 2/2 from the line /17 points on the game ... Warren continued to pressure the ball fullcourt ... converting on back to back turnovers going the other way for Warrior buckets - one each by Stadelman & Barry ... Barry added his 2nd three pointer to close the MT lead ... when the dust settled at the end of the 3rd Warren had pulled to within 4 pts, yet the Warriors left points out on the court as they went 0 for 6 from the charity stripe in the quarter ... Miami Trace 52 Warren 48 after 3 ... the War continued into the final 8 minutes ... 4:11 left in the game Trace had doubled up their lead to 62-54 ... Skye Salyers opened the period with 2pts in the paint followed on the next trip down with an open look 3 pointer , Baker with a drive, score & one ... Baker finished with 6pts in the period ... the Warriors weren't done as Stadelman put up 21 points in the final 8 minutes which included 4 transition buckets on MT turnovers ... 10/11 FTs as he attacked the rim to score stopping the clock ... and a final 3 point shot make ... 21 in the qtr/44 for the game ... the Warriors got the score down to 58-62 with 3:29 to play ... Miami Trace worked the clock ... got to the line ...Guthrie was put on the line by WHS for 12 FT attempts making 8 (he was 0/7 thru 3 qtrs from the line)... Warren was still within range if they could get a shot to fall at 1:44 on the clock 62-66 ... not enough fgs for the Warriors in the end ... Miami Trace closed out the game with 14/21 from the FT line in the 4th ... Miami Trace fans had a scare as Guthrie went down hard with 6:12 to play, looking like a knee injury , he was helped off the court - returned within a few seconds of game time to finish out the game ... outstanding TEAM win for the Panthers of Coach Ackley as they will take on the East District semifinal winner on Sunday at the Convocation Center ... Miami Trace 79 Warren 71 a final ...

Nice report. Miami Trace must be for real. Stubenville is pretty good. Should be a good one z!

I think it was LeftHandedCoach that brought up that Unioto team from a decade ago and the more I thought about it, the more it made sense.

Both were undefeated and playing Warren and both were not taken seriously by a majority of this forum.

The similarities really end there, but this is a very good Miami Trace team and they aced their biggest test yet, because Warren was outstanding as well.

A great career for Stadelman and if that is it for Coach Maddox, he’s one of the best to ever do it in the SE District.

First time I had seen Trace live this season and even minus Guthrie they were still probably the biggest team we had seen all season, tough matchup. Great season and career for a group of seniors who all basically started as sophomores and freshman.

... Monroe Central took away all scoring options from Warren in their W over the Warriors - making it a Julian Stadelman vs MC offensively ... last night the same ... MT checks off almost all of the boxes :

* A BIG MAN in the middle - check ... Guthrie at 6-7and 280lbs WITH the footwork to move in the paint, lots of excellent attribute on the basketball court (hands/feet/ strength - you "ain't" moving him off the blocks, the ability to go the high post to open up the floor for the other 4 players on offense, he DEMANDS a double team which again opens up the offense as they have to choose who to "cheat off of" or double down off of ...
*Size and length at the forward spot(S) -check ... Salyers/Robinette 6-4 each, length both, can get to the rim off the dribble , can score on the perimeter, know the game well as they drop into view on the backside of a Guthrie get opposite ... defensively can defend vs guards, take away perimeter scoring with the length they bring closing out on shooters, when they get beat oft times the length allows them to get back in plays/block shots from behind at the very least they are in the offensive players heads ...
** a 6-3 power 2 guard - Baker is unique in that he is BIG at 6-3, big as in football linebacker like strength, he can dictate where a guard - pg or sg - will/can go with the ball and he is quick enough to guard both sg/pg and with Guthrie in the paint - where is a penetrating guard going to go ?
* PG to run the show - check ... Bowers is outstanding! ... a freshman no more after 23 games ... as he proved last night he can score at all 3 levels and play D ...
* EVERYONE on the floor is a scorer - proven last night as all 5 starters scored in double figures ...

Question marks:
... if there is a question mark it would be depth off the bench but last night Whitaker is a solid fill-in at all of the non-point guard positions , after that ??????

... handling pressure - 20 turnovers last night vs Warren's "short in size compared to MT pressure"

... lack of a bench (6 deep) ... getting tired in the 4th period ...

... FT shooting ... last night 16/31 - ouch

... MT is a solid all around TEAM, that is built to handle all of the different combinations of teams that they HAVE seen this season, and WILL see in the post season ...

... I stay neutral during the regular season, post season right up to the point it's SE District teams against the world ... I wish MT the best in representing the SE district vs the East district this Sunday at the Convo ...

Pfloyd, great write ups and analysis as normal. Miami trace shocked me at their overall athletic ability. In all my years of watching high school ball, I can’t remember a time that all 5 starters were in double digits in a regulation game. I think that is more impressive than anything. Have you ever seen that before?

Does anyone know if the Stadleman kid is going anywhere to play in college? Know he's not very big but man he can really score. Would love to see him get a shot locally at Marietta College.

MC and Capital were the two schools someone had mentioned to me awhile back.

I’ll share more later. But if he could start at these colleges now he’d have offers now. Respectfully.

Stadelman has had essentially zero scholarship interest, at least as of January 1. But he took his game to a heightened level in the past 6 weeks, so maybe something will happen. There are multiple factors that impact a player's college prospects, including who his high school coach is (sometimes his AAU coach). If I were a college coach at the D-3 level, and maybe even a D-2 in the right location, I'd take a good look.
