Minford 55
Chesapeake 40 a final
... great matchup of teams for the D5 Regional Finale ... Minford entered with a stellar 24-1 record vs 22-3 Chesapeake ... SEOhio would be the winner as "A" team from the SE District was going to the Final Four no matter the outcome ... the Peake, the Falcons BOTH wanted to be THAT team that would represent the SE District ... an OUTSTANDING, well contested 1st two quarters of play - couldn't have asked for more as a fan of high school hoops - great defense by both sides as the Peake took away 2 of the 3 scorers in Minfords "Big 3" - 2000 point scorer Myles Montgomery was held without a fg in the 2 qtrs ... Jackson Shoemaker 0 points ... the only amigo left was Mr. Kayser (Bennett Kayser) - the 6-6 sr. carried the load in the first half for the Falcons with 17 pts ... a 3 headed monster - cut off 2 heads ... deal with the one ... Chesapeake was paced by the scoring of 4 of 5 starters in the half as soph Maddox Kazee dropped 12 points including a pair of 3's ... the supporting cast of jr Kaden Perkins 7 pts for the half ... 5-11 sr Ethan Kerns 3pts on a 2nd quarter trey ... 6-5 jr Karson Frecka with a 15 footer & one 3pts ... ... a well played half of action as each team took care of the ball - Chesapeake with 3 turnovers /Minford 4 miscues ... Minford 27 Chesapeake 25 after 2 ...
... basketball, in particular post season basketball, is not a game that is static - sometimes a team throws up the ball and literally everything goes in ... other times the basket feels like that 18" in diameter circle is about 8 inches across - smaller than the size of the basketball you're trying put through it ... coming out of the locker rooms the Chesapeake defense was able to hold the hot shooting Bennett Kayser to 0 pts - win ... Myles Montgomery was held to 2 pts/0 fgs for the quarter and the first 3 quarters - win, win, win... no supporting players outside the Big 3 scored in the 3rd ! 0 points - win! but (and there is always a "but") that left the 3rd member of the Big 3 - Jackson Shoemaker - Shoe was held scoreless in the first 2 quarters ... in the 3rd the 6-4 sr. post player stepped out beyond the arc - same spot he drained a 3 from vs Garaway - deja vu all over again, splash - 3 pts ... Shoemaker followed it up with another trey 3pts ... no one else for Minford was finding the basket 0'fer the quarter from the field ... only one scorer for the Falcons - the Peake would have been loving it but (and again a but) apparently the basket was in fact smaller than the size of the ball at their offensive end as the Panthers went 0-9 from the floor during the 3rd ... the only points for CHS was Phillip Thacker being fouled on a drive - make/make from the FT line .. 2pts in the 3rd ... 0% from the floor ... defensively holding anyone not named Shoemaker to 0% from the floor ... Shoemaker would add to his total with an offensive board and putback 2pts before closing out the scoring for both teams on a transition finish at the rim 2pts ... a 10 point quarter for the Big Man in the middle & beyond the arc ... Minford 39 Chesapeake 27 after 3 ... panic mode? not really - defensively the Peake had shutdown 2/3's of the Big 3 in the 3rd period - as a team they couldn't throw the ball in the ocean from the beach ... unfortunately some things don't change, a learning experience? ... the Panthers went over 11 minutes coming out of halftime without making a shot from the floor ... Maddox Kazee finally scored on a drive & finish for 2pts & 1 - 3 pt play with 3:38 on the game clock in the 4th and final period ... CHS would go 2/13 from the floor in the 4th period ... the Kazee 3 point play then the final shot of the game/season for the Panther's by Andrew Issaac - a corner trey 3 pts ... in between CHS went 7/9 from the free throw line to give the Peake 13 points in the period ... not nearly enough - as has been the case in almost every game this season - the Big 3 do show up ... in the 4th Montgomery put up 8 pts ... Shoemaker after doing the damage in the 3rd and shouldering the offense added a putback 2pts ... Bennett Kayser was doing Kayser things - 6pts on a pair of transition dunks to go with a coast to coast drive and finish at the rim ... MHS - 16 points in the quarter ... the Big 3 WAS the BIG 3 just not at the same time- still good enough to earn the gold ticket to the Final Four for the first time in school history ... Great write up. Those threes by Shoemaker to open the third were the momentum swing. Minford as good as advertised, best of luck in the F4. Role players that can step up when needed, ie. Shoemaker, are what make good teams great. Congrats to Peake on a nice postseason run. Expect them back next year

Glad I was able to make it down yesterday for both games, a good end to basketball season.

Great write up as always, Pfloyd. Heck of a game for the Shoemaker kid. He's what gave that momentum after the half. When you get this far in tournaments, you need those role players to step up. Can't always carry a team with two players at this level. Congratulations to the Minford Falcons.
